MATCH PREVIEW | Rhinos return to action against Valkyrie

The Betfred Women's Super League competition resumes this weekend as the highlight clash of round three pits Leeds Rhinos against York Valkyrie at AMT Headingley on Saturday afternoon, kick off 2pm.

The Rhinos entered last week's break in the fixture list with their first win of the league season in a high-scoring 68-0 win over Featherstone Rovers, but the Valkyrie will provide a more stern opposition under the leadership of new head coach Leon Pryce as they aim to get back to winning ways.

Here's your match preview:

Opposition

York's Women's programme entered a new phase in 2026 after being elevated by Lindsay Anfield for the last four years. A struggling squad when in their first Super League season in 2018 and 2019, Anfield's arrival from Castleford Tigers after the Covid pandemic in 2020 kick-started the Valkyrie into the two-time Grand Final winners they are today, and now the club enters a new era as four-time Grand Final winner and England international Pryce heads up the team from this season.

Previously head coach of Workington Town's Championship squad between 2018 and 2019, Pryce inspired the side to a Grand Final and promotion play-off in his first season before departing in April 2019. Now back in coaching, he has guided York to a mixed start already in both league and cup competitions, but they have a chance to find their first major scalp of the campaign should they defeat a Leeds side who are growing in confidence themselves after strong outings against Wigan and Featherstone so far.

The Valkyrie flexed their muscles with 88 total points scored in Cup against Barrow and Huddersfield before being nilled by Wigan en route to Denis Bett's side lifting the Cup at Wembley, but the league has provided a more solid foundation for the team to mount a run for silverware. Kicking the campaign off against Huddersfield, the Giants couldn't find any points in a 42-0 drubbing by the Valkyrie, before they pushed St Helens close a week later in a 18-14 defeat to the Red Vee.

Familar faces Sinead Peach, Sade Rihari, Liv Wood and Eboni Partington continue to drive the Valkryie side forward, but squad investment has also captured some standout stars. Canadian Megan Pakulis returned from NRLW side Gold Coast Titans to be part of the Valkyrie squad for her second season, plus international team mate Petra Woods has been ever-present with five starts and two total tries in outings against Huddersfield and Barrow. Pakulis is amongst five York players with three tries so far in 2026 - two of which have come in the opening league matches.

Former Parramatta Eels and Indigenous All-Star outside back Monique Donovan is the latest star name from Australia to sign for the club as she has two tries in four games, whilst Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs half back Abbey Fuz is yet to appear since her arrival in the off-season too. A number of homegrown products also continue to make consistent appearances for the club, led by Lisa Parker, Olivia Turner and Ruby Ellis who have all broken through in 2026 from the Under-19s.
